Venerable jam maker R&W Scott has signalled further “significant” investment in its Carluke site after expanding into the pie-fillings market.

The firm, owned by Aim-quoted ingredients group Real Good Food, has already spent about £150,000 on new equipment and reconfiguring its South Lanarkshire factory to give additional capacity.

Managing director John Easton said: “We started with jam production and soon diversified into sweet sauces and spreads, and now with the launch of our pie fillings into the food service sector, we are excited about expanding further into the wholesale sector.

“It’s important that we continue to innovate and move forward and we’ve invested in our factory and equipment in order to expand into a new category. We also have significant plans to invest further in the next year.”

R&W Scott, which traces its roots back to 1880, has also brought in seven new employees recently in areas including sales, marketing, customer service and finance. It plans to boost its production workforce over the coming six months.

Easton said: “Our plant at Carluke has moved from being a production factory into its own business, and we have plans to develop even further.”

Real Good Food last month said that sales volumes at R&W Scott were “marginally” ahead of last year, generating revenues of £10.1m, as overall operating profits jumped 19 per cent to £3.2 million in the year to March.
