POSSESSION only matters if you can do something with it. Hearts saw a lot of the ball in this match but could not translate it into scoring opportunities, let alone goals.
Falkirk, on the other hand, are currently in possession of the final top-six berth and made sure they held on toit with a resolute if somewhat perfunctory performance.

As the second half kicked off, the stadium announcer, in an attempt to rally the crowd, and possibly even the Hearts players, reminded them that the stakes were huge for the club and asked "who wants it most?" If desires translate into action, then the answer would appear to be the visitors. Because while this match ended in stalemate, in the bigger context it remains advantage Falkirk.

The split is now just two games away for these two sides and with the other contenders, Aberdeen, also drawing, it was a good day's work from John Hughes' side. Earning their fifth clean sheet from the past six matches, their new stoic approach made it impossible for a Hearts side blunted by a lack of real striking prowess to breakthrough.

Having impressed in the past with their flair and determination to play football on the deck, and treating fans to some slick passing, Falkirk have switched styles slightly now that the top-six prize is in sight. Gone is the pure attack mindset and more risky open play, replaced by a more organised and defensive philosophy. It may not be as pretty but it has earned them the chance to achieve their season's aim of seeing out the final five games of the term amongst the country's footballing hierarchy.

Tynecastle is a ground where they were destroyed 4-2 earlier in the season – the scoreline only given a degree of respectability due to two late goals – but from early in this match it was obvious a repeat was not on the cards.

"It was imperative that we came here and got something. We were organised and kept our shape, we were disciplined and resolute. I picked a team who could stand up to them and I think we did that," said Hughes. "We were then able to hit them on the counter-attack, which we did a few times."

Whether it was the perceived do or die nature of this one which got to the guys or not, there was plenty of urgency but very little fluency.

The game did swing from end to end but that was down to very little cohesive play. It was all breaking balls and clunking passages of play which made ground but very little real headway. In a game crying out for some composure, neither side possessed a player who could really dictate the tempo for any period of time and as a result the ball bounded about, taking a battering but causing neither keeper much concern.

Young Scott Arfield again impressed in the Falkirk midfield, while Jack Ross and Darren Barr, in particular, were key at the back.

Both sides knew that the onus was on Hearts and, booed off at the end, the truth is they didn't do enough. Caretaker manager Stephen Frail admitted that his side had "huffed and puffed" without much consequence. Calum Elliot had a chance in the 10th minute but Barr got back to block in the box.

Five minutes later Saulius Mikoliunas broke through, only to be foiled by the out-rushing Falkirk keeper, Robert Olejnik. There was controversy in the incident, though, as the keeper was out of his area and it appeared to be his arm that halted the ball but as the crowd appealed, referee Charlie Richmond waved play on. Apparently he agreed with Hughes' opinion that it was the keeper's chest.

Laryea Kingston was back in the Hearts team and, with few out-and-out strikers at his disposal, Frail started him just ahead of the midfield, with Elliot the lone targetman.

It was hoped that Lithuanian wingers Deividas Cesnauskis and Mikoliunas would get up and offer some assistance but the former had to be replaced after just 15 minutes. Audrius Ksanivicius came on, forcing a formation reshuffle which saw Kingston pushed back into the midfield four. There he was less effective and well hustled by Tom Scobie and Carl Finnigan.

Afterwards Frail was asked if last month's transfer of Andrius Velicka would ultimately cost his side a place in the top six, but he claimed that such was the paucity of goalscoring chances carved out in the match, that even the club's top scorer would have struggled to conjure up anything to turn the draw into a win.

And it could have been worse. As time ebbed away, Falkirk's veteran playmaker Russell Latapy looked to be preparing to come on but never entered the fray.

It may yet come back to haunt them, with a trip away to Aberdeen their final fixture before the split, but rather than go gung-ho in search of the win, Hughes was content to keep the chasing pack at bay for another week at least. For Hearts, it was yet another afternoon of frustration.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Darren Barr. Part of a Falkirk defence which was well-drilled and easily contained Hearts.

ASIDE: The last two games between the sides had gone with home advantage.

I can't understand how anyone can hate the gunts - they are comedy gold after all.

I'm sure Vlad'll fix it in the summer, and the Champions League dream will indeed become a reality within 5 years.

#3 Really? What's it like following two teams?

Anyhow, I googled "hearts new stand development" for some info and the TOP link is a Hibs.net discussion - no kidding. One guy on the thread had actually gone to the trouble of finding out the average size of travel lodge hotel rooms in Edinburgh to compare them to the ones proposed in the planning application, just so he could come up with some theory that the rooms would be too small. Another had gone to the council website to read the plans. Another owned up to regularly checking the Hearts website.

Did someone say obsession? Chips on both shoulders?

And there were many, many such threads on Hibs.net. As I said, it must be hard work following two teams.

Totally agree with No5 - is was so bad I am struggling to come up with words to describe it in all honesty. This constant "bigging up" Elliot is unbelieveable - lets accept he is clueless and move on. Mind you there were a few of them on the pitch today including Neilso,Stewart, Audrey, Miko (spineless coward) and Mole when he came on. The only 3 players on the pitch yesterday I would describe as quality are Banks, Kingston and Ruben - I feel sorry for them having to play with these other imposters. In Kingston's case, imagine playing with Michael Essien one match and Elliot/Mole in the next - jeez what a come down that must be for him. We also have a Manager who has no idea whatsoever what he is doing, probably because he is not doing it !!! Yet we still have these clowns who are rushing into buying season tickets now - they really do need to have a hard look at themselves if they really think they are helping the situation. Don't you see Vlad and his merry men are talking the absolute cr@p and abusing your love of the club, in the same way as I love it too. Enough is enough so let's send him a very strong message we are not paying what he wants to watch trash like we saw yesterday. I am actually glad we will not make the Top 6 now, as it would be embarrassing to be involved with this set of muppets wearing the maroon shirt

For me there were absolutely no surprises in yesterdays
performance.
As one fan stated above, we have a bit of quality in Kingston, and that is where it stops really.
Frail & Co have served up dreadful displays like this all season. They are the norm, the exceptions are those wins against the OF.
Frail has absolutely no clue, and he MUST stop with this ridiculous flattering of Elliot. The boy is absolutely dire.
Too many players in maroon, who are ony up to first division standard, and that is a fact.
Shaggy, has managed to keep Vlad sweet and some of the press o his side, but he's part of the problem and we need to rectify the manager situation PRONTO!

Sounds like an awful match! Falkirk obviously had a game plan to avoid losing and they stuck to it! Bottom 6 for us now for the first time!

I think we should start planning for next season by clearing out the deadwood - starting with Frail! Vlad has the cash to build a team that can challenge! This season has been shocking and this is not unexpected really!

What?? I can't think what you mean.
I doubt if many of the "eenemy" here actually hate Hearts as a club....what they do DETEST however, is the sheer pomposity of those small number of jambos who put down everybody else as being supporters of "wee" clubs...failing to understand that Old Firm apart, we are ALL "wee clubs" in Scotland.rendering all that "we're bigger/better/fetter/more stupid than you" to the level of the gutter....and then they feign surprise when others give them regular pelters for that same lofty attitude........which is the only "lofty" thing about their club these days !!

5* and 6*

You almost saved me the effort of writing. Although I thought as no 6 there were a few passable performances. As for Elliot he is so desperate to prove himself a striker, he will shoot rather than pass it to a better placed player. As for FRail if it doesn't work he hasn't got any idea how to change things. What does he do, Chesney comes off and he changes things round to adopt same pattern. Then he brings on Mole to replace Elliot again no tactical change. Well I can go on but no point 5 and 6 you already have expressed my feelings.

I myself don't have a season ticket but I go up to Edinburgh every few weeks and will go the match. Buying a new season ticket is up to the individual. There are loyal ones who would never desert the club. However, are those people any more loyal than the those who refuse to buy tickets as they see their club reaching rock bottom. Those people love their side and want something to be done about standard of play and players.

Seems the penny is finally dropping with some of the Hearts support. I have a few Jambo mates who are not renewing this season even if a manager is appointed. They say they will pay game by game, and they wont be going to the supposed grade b games against St Mirren, Hamilton (when they come up).

Turnover for the Mad one will decline this season imo.

As has been said by posters some weeks before hope bottom six means that Hearts will now play the promising youngsters for the rest of the league campaign instead of the older average players.
Vlad is not stupid (really) and to entice season ticket holders he will need a new manager, pool of transfer money, attractive style of play. All of the above cant be made public even if there are already some done deals so hard though it is becoming we will just have to believe. I still think the team will be geared to peak with the stadium but some fun and entertainment before then please.

Good Manager = Money

Pool of cash for transfers = More money

Attractive style of play = George Burley (done that)

You already have 13,000 season ticket holders this year so where is all this money comihg from?

Not from Vlad's back pocket that's for sure.

My concerns for next season stem from the latest accounts.
The debt at around £40m ws expected, but so too were thigs like top six, and qualifying for europe.
We look unlikely to get into the top six, and that will cost us financially.
So where does the money come from to bring in new players, and by that I mean better players?
Add to this equation an absolute certainty that season tickets will be well below this seasons total, and it looks bleaker.
Mr Romanov really has to get it right this time. Ever sice he sacked George Burley, he has made error after error in his appointments to the footballing side.
For goodness sake we've sacked managers when we were fourth in the league!!!!
My loyalty to the club remains, however, should the re-developments "stall" I think the game's up!!
Back to football...Shaggy, the team you put out yesterday will get chewed up by United. Get your finger out, or get some help. One or the other.
Something pretty radical is needed, those players that you referred to as "my guys", are losers.
Sort it out.

Frail is a complete liar and a plonker. One he tells lies about what is the real situation at Tynecastle. He says Velicka would make no diference.Do you really believe that Mr Frail or are you insane. That Romanov who I`ve already stated wants to sell the team and has no interest in the playing side sold him to make a quick buck.Anyone interested in being in the top six would never have sold the only goalscorer. Now what`s left Elliot and Mole.Frail again tells lies saying Ellliot is a prospect. He`s no more a prospect than the crocked McCann ( and they actuallly might resign that case for the geriatric ward )He has no footballing ability and yet Frail still says he has.Let`s say frail can`t be that stupid so he`s either a liar or needs a white stick. The rest of the team bar about 3 are just not good enough either. There`s no way that they can make the top 6 as there is no one to score goals. You must score to win games Mr Frail so you don`t miss Velicka. What a blatant lie.
As for the future at Tynecastle it is bleak.Romanov is not interested,That`s a fact not a wild statement. He wants to sell of the team and is only interested in the ground for commercial purposes. The fans should show their disinterest by not renewing season tickets and a complete boycot of the ground till the end of the season to show Romanov that he might not be interested but we are.We demand better than this tripe.

A lot of our fans keep believing that because was good under Burley ca be good again soon. It was TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO that Burley was sacked. What has gone well in that time????

How many false promises, lies, spin have we been fed and many swallowed.

18 months ago there was a call for a boycott and I was firmly against it saying Romanov needed some mnore time to prove himself. Perhaps I was wrong, perhaps though he did need a bit more rope to hang himself.

In my opinion he has used that rope very effectively!

For 1st time in 20 years I won't be renewing my ticket and I am no fair weather supporter having endured much in 30 years of support.

Next time Vlad shows up it should be us leading the "Champions kleague, you're having a laugh" chant. At the break we'll have half the points of an average Rangers team.

We've been relegated before but Vlad has brought us to the lowest point in self esteem for supporters. A training club for Kaunas players is not what we had in mind.

Can't add much more to what has already been said about how dire it was yesterday. I have followed this club through thick and thin for 45 years. Relegations and other lows, but I can't remember ever feeling so pessimistic about the future as I do right now. Like many others I am seriously considering whether or not to renew my season ticket. Only because I want to send a message to Mad Vlad Tsar of Gorgie. He really has to be made to understand that this situation cannot continue.

BigRon,

It will all come out in the wash in the summer. The 2 crucial questions are the next manager and the new stand. Any more delays in appointing a manager and any backsliding as far as the stand goes then I think our goose is cooked and VR is seeking an exit strategy.
I don`t live in Scotland now but am coming over for a long weekend next weekend(primarily for a drink or twenty) and although I first sat in the old stand in 1963 I am seriously considering giving the match against Dundee Utd a miss although I have a ticket.
My exasperation with Vlad is with the total lack of transparency surrounding him and his flunkies and the feeling that this famous institution no longer belongs to the people who support it.

Manchester United: £660m (At June 2006).
Liverpool: £350m (At January 2008).
Arsenal: £307m (At November 2007).

All these figures are debt.

The garden is far from rosy. But the nonsense spouted on here about finances gets on ma nips.
I am a Hearts supporter and i want to see my team competing at the best level that is possible, currently we are not.
We are rubbish at the moment because the footballing side of the club has been poorly managed.
Of course we need a new manager and a few quality players, everybody who has watched the side this seson will agree. It may happen it may not.
I will be paying for games next season on a week to week basis with the hope that things will get better. My choice.

i noticed yesterday that the hearts team really need to play for each other and not themselves.
i noticed on a couple of occasions robbie neilson no passing to larry when larry was right infront of him with plenty of space.
and when berra took that head knock in the 2nd half no players apart from rallied round him to see if he was alright. the team need some serious team bonding theres no point of taking them paint balling or what ever it is they do just the once this nneeds to be done on a weekly basis
34

also i think larrys played his last game for us after the match he ran over to the gorgie road stand and started shaking hands with some of the crowd then ran over to the old stand and did the same.
he'll get injured playing for ghana then larry no more.

#35 LionheartStupidman - "Could the Hobonomic experts please explain to me why these clubs aint in administration yet."

Perhaps you should take a look at the turnover, stable & committed leadership in boardroom, TV revenue streams, guaranteed income in the EPL, value of players, worldwide fanbase & merchandising, corporate sponsorship, stadium naming rights, last 8 of CL, 70,000 fans at every home game etc. for the clubs you mention before you post your nonsensical drivel.

If you seriously believe that Yams of Kaunas operate in the same football sphere as Liverpool, Man. u. and Arsenal then you should be sectioned.

Sounds like a dire match but with Aberdeen drawing your chances of the top 6 are far from over. Dundee United at home and Kilmarnock away are fixtures you could clearly get points from, especially considering the very few goals you give away.

Do hibs a favour and give united a good pumping next week please.

Levein/Mcghee both sound decent targets if true. I'd suggest Levein is unlikely though considering his success at united, his open ambition to prove himself in England and his admission that the impending arrival of Romanov was a factor in his original departure.

Anyway to intice these sort of candidates there will have to be tangible guarantees regarding transfer budget/autonomy over team matters etc so, like most people are saying, it is a case of wait and see what happens in the summer.
40

the thinking man,

falkirk 23/03/2008 13:24:55
Worst performance since St Mirren 26 Dec. Received season ticket renewal email last week. Someone is having a laugh.
1 - where is the new manager, promised months ago?
2 - a captain should motivate, as Elvis did. Berra? Surely some mistake.
3 - Neilson in the press at the weekend wanting Frail to be next manager. Is that because no decent manager would consider picking him every week?
4 - Tall, probably our best right back or central defender on the bench while Neilson and Zaliukas (who seems to think you have to watch/guard your opponent like a basketball player) remain on the park.
5 - Is Pinilla really injured or is it another of those mystery illnesses/injuries Gordon and Pressley supposedly had?
6 - Callum Elliot. I hope I never see him again in a Hearts side. Once again Frail showing his total lack of awareness re what constitutes a good player. For that matter, just what did Audrey do when he came on, another Lithuanian waste of space.
7 - Mikey Stewart. Just as well his timing was poor as just one of his petulent late tackles would have resulted in another ordering off for him if connection had been made. A prima donna lacking in ability we can do without.
8 - Why has work on the new stand been put back another year? Is Vlad now having second thoughts on his investment here?
9 - The boy, Roman, who was visible during the good times has mysteriously disappeared.
10 - Our season tickets in the platinum section were supposed to include the match programme sent out before the event. Were programmes not published for the Falkirk game? Another cost cutting exercise?

Anyone renewing season tickets at the moment will merely convince Vlad all is well.

May I compliment you on the sudden improvement in your weitten English? It's almost as if you'd never spoken Lithuanian in your life. Quite remarkable!
Laughing at the Jambos: Great news for you on this Easter Sunday -- Buffalo Bill has risen from the dead and intends to be at next season's cup final.
Oh, but I forgot, the Flairmeisters would never do anything as crass as win the cup, would they? That's for common teams.
Gentlemen, I salute you both, the finest double act since Laurel and Hardy (who probably could remember Hibs winning the cup ... just!)

Don't you know that he's the CyberKing around here and no-one gets an opinion (or a post) without his express say-so...........and he's hung over today from the green "cough-mixture" (that the chemist delivers personally, if you know what I mean), that he winna approve you today!!
He's a total nutter, unless he's sober.....but I've only been here a few weeks, so I've never actually known it!!

Well...if ever we needed a confirmation of your insanity, we have it here.
Not only do you continue to prove yourself a LIAR, but you obviously forget from day to day, hour to hour ...quite WHO and WHERE you are.
Apart from copying every theme that is raised against you (isn't that all TOO embarrassing) you continue to give us the "VICTOR and me are different" while INEVITABLY appearing,Tommy Cooper-like ("Just Like That", on near-neighbouring posts...just like always............SO...........if anybody has the identity problem pea-brain, it's you........I doubt if you will ever improve, which makes my mission to rid the world of MadJambo disease all the more vital, and I now re-double my efforts to remove this vile epidemic (mind you, it's only TWO of you, so it won't take long)fromthe face of an otherwise very pleasant city..........(a city doubtless better known to me than to you), unless we count youw Wester Hailes billet again Muchacho Eh??

I was wondering where the news that Hearts were considering approaching Levein and McGhee came from? From inside Tyncastle? If so, could this be considered "tapping" like existed (according to Jambos on this forum) in the Webster case? Or is the whole new manager scenario wishful thinking by Hearts fans? I would imagine that the Dundee Utd and Motherwell owners can't be very pleased about the speculation. Perhaps another run-in with the SFA rottweillers beckons?

So if it's just a newspaper story with no substance to it, why are so many Hearts fans bringing it up as a real possibility? Isn't that what us Hobos are accused of with regards to the debt?

The club is in debt,we all no that.
The club is looking for a new manager,we no that as well.
If you were a scribe looking for a "new manager for Hearts" story.Who in the SPL would you write about ? You would only go for someone in the top six.

The current OF managers..nope
Your Manager.. nope
Yogi..nope

That doesnt leave to many does it.

You cant write about managers who have no current job because they can poopoo it straight away.

That leaves 2 candidates then.
92

Hobo Harry,

23/03/2008 17:21:55
110 victorian, What does that mean? Do tell, and hopefully your reply will be of a standard which you held in times gone by, and not on a par with the rubbish that you (and many others) have been churning out this past week. These threads are becoming as bad as the OF ones.
93

Hobo Harry,

23/03/2008 17:26:05
111 LionheartFodithman, I appreciate the at least sensible reply, something which many are incapable of these days. Of course newspapers make things up, but why are Hearts fans on this forum playing along with it? As I said before, thats what we Hibs fans get accused of.

You know....manager that picks the team..Players of a decent quality...fair on the pitch worth watching...Top 6 finish.

Beating the Hibby,s comfortably.....Again.

Nothing much ;-)

Hobo Harry,

114 victorian, My question was where the story originated. If it cames from inside Tyncastle then there is a problem. If it is an invention of the press, which is very possible, then you guys should stop even discussing it. As for LF's point that the new man would have to come from the top six, why can't he be foreign? British experience I believe was the criteria, not necessarily British by birth.

I didnt say anything about the criteria for the new manager.
I stated why a scribe would pen an article about the 2 names in question.

The Levein speculation will never go away and McGhee,s name has been banded about on these and other threads for months.
My own personal choice would be Billy Davies but i do believe that the new man has been targeted and is currently in a job which is the reason we will see no one for the foreseable.
102

Hobo Harry,

123 JamboThrough&Through, Absolutely correct, and that's been my point. There has been much gnashing of teeth from Jambos over Webster being tapped, and yet the Hearts fans are quite happy to indulge in the same thing with regards to the new coach. Because on this occasion it suits the needs of Hearts? If there is a newspaper leak soon where one the ugly sisters are reported to be interested in Berra will we hear no dissenting Hearts fans? Can't have it both ways.
