Hearts 1 - 0 Dundee Utd: Top half still in Hearts' grasp

Published Date: 30 March 2008
NO ONE associated with Hearts may like the idea of Vladimir Romanov interfering in team matters but they must be wishing he had turned up at more games this season.
After all, the last time he was at Tynecastle, on November 11 last year, the team thrashed Aberdeen in one of their most convincing performances of the season. Yesterday, with the majority shareholder again in attendance, the side defied odds to bett
er a Dundee United side in the thick of the battle for third place.

The visitors had two men sent off in the final minutes but if that scunnered them, it was nothing like the kick in the teeth Hearts received as they headed back into the dressing room at full-time. With the latest scores from the Aberdeen and Falkirk games suggesting they would gain two points on their rivals for a place in the top six post-split, their first win of the campaign over United had seemed like a marvellous days work. But then came news of Aberdeen's winner. It gives the SPL exactly what they are always looking for, some drama on the final weekend of fixtures before the best and the rest go their separate ways.

Hearts players had met the owner on Friday and his presence did seem to galvanise the players. According to captain Christophe Berra, it shouldn't take the appearance of the banker to inspire the team, however, and he is simply hoping they can do it by themselves next weekend.

But the fact the owner was allowed to slip into his seat ten minutes before kick-off, greeted by barely a murmur, underlines just how low morale has dipped in the Tynecastle stands recently. Following a below-par season which rendered a place in the top six the best the supporters could hope for in the past two months, the days of hyperbole and belief, heralded by the banker's initial arrival on the scene, have long since gone. Worse still, even the outrage of recent times had subsided, replaced by an apathy.

Romanov's afternoon was undoubtedly made easier by the fact that the players were able to get their noses in front. In part due to a slightly flat Dundee United's failings as much as their own endeavours, the lead mattered all the same and eased the pressure in the home side.

Caretaker manager Stephen Frail opted for Christian Nade in the lead role, with support coming from wide in the shape of Laryea Kingston and Saulius Mikoliunas. And he will thank his lucky stars for their efforts. That is not a word which could sensibly be associated with Nade. A guy who infuriates fans with his unwillingness to marry industry to his unquestionable talent, his stomach for the battle is yet to make itself apparent. While he couldn't get on the scoresheet, he was at least still on the pitch in the 89th minute and enticed Garry Kenneth into his second rash tackle of the afternoon. It earned Dundee United their first red card, the defender already trooping towards the tunnel by the time the referee fished the cards from his pocket. It also earned him a rebuke from his manager, who slated his "stupidity" and reasoned it may mean him sitting out the rest of the season, with the experienced Darren Dods set to replace him.

A minute later Kenneth was joined in the dressing room by Danny Swanson. His was a straight red for a challenge on Marius Zaliukas but Levein seemed more sympathetic to his second-half substitute, claiming it was the same challenge Nade had made in the first half, the Hearts player escaping even a yellow card. He refused to condone the challenge but did appeal for consistency.

Hearts took the lead when Eggert Jonsson played a ball through from central midfield into the path of Kingtson in the 27th minute and the Ghanaian hit a right-footed shot low past Lukasz Zaluska. Having managed to take the lead Hearts dug in to protect it, earning their seventh clean sheet in ten games and were aided by United's obvious reliance on the long ball forward for Mark De Vries.

Hearts fight on for another week, although the worry is, after his two latest visits resulting in such fine wins, Romanov may disappear back to Lithuania with the false impression of everything being rosier in his Gorgie garden that it perhaps really is.

As a supporter I could never want the boys to lose, but the win did save Romanov from receieving the grief he deserves.

Still looked like 2 bad teams out there. 35 points ahead of Gretna (after 10 points deducted) and 33 away from Rangers with games in hand. When outstanding games played, we will be closer to lonely Gretna than an average Rangers side.

2

Sadiq,

Edinburgh 30/03/2008 02:40:25
Absolutely. He deserved some grief.

Slightly worried that the Aberdeen v Falkirk night is on a Monday night. If we win on Saturday Aberdeen are as good as out so will not be as motivated as they'd have been had the game been played at the same time.

It could work to Falkirks advantage.

#2 Agreed. Switching the Hearts-Killie game to Monday would be the fair thing to do. Games like this when teams are going for the same goal should always be played on the same day and usually are.

It's a funny old world.

Heart's fan hoping they can somehow finish in the top 6.

They used to be a big team

West Palm Jambo,

West Palm Beach 30/03/2008 05:15:30
I am a proud Jambo and will always look for positives in any situation involving the mighty JT'S. Let it be known that Hearts have just complted a series of games against each of the other teams in the SPL and excluding 2 heavy defeats agaist the old firm, the outlook is good.
9 games, 6 wins, 3 draws, no losses, 2 goals conceded.
1 goal conceded at Tynecastle. No goals against from teams in the top 9 other than Rangers or Celtic.
Also, we are begining to rid ourselves of the dross and we may not go out and spend big but we will hopefully spend wisely and pick up some more calculated buys and combine with some products of the academy.
The future IS bright. The future IS MAROON!!!

Great 'report' Moira - a few small paragraphs on the match and the rest could have been written in pub beforehand. No mention of Hunt's or Miko's missed, no analysis - just more rambling about Romanov. PS - just in case you were in the pub by the that time, the Swanson red card was for a tackle on Jonsson not Zaliukas! If you are going to disappear early and ask your mates what happened, make sure you can trust them (Sports Ed take note)

The second half display was better than we've seen for a while, but the first half did not fill me with confidence.
I tell you what! Utd. are a busy bunch, they certainly worked hard.
However class shines through and in the end we were worthy winners.
To our persistent Hibby "contributors" who will no doubt flood in on this article, when they get "oot o thir pits"....I see the FFF style produced just the one shot on target at Motherwell yesterday.....Meeehaaawwwww!

Jam Tarts 1874,

Can't think of anyone less suited to playing up front on his own than Nade. He was clearly un-impressed by being surrounded by 3 DU defenders every time the ball came his way. Looked like Frail must have given him a bashing at half-time though as I though Nade was a bit more purposeful in the 2nd half.

It is a pity that Palazuelos was on the end of our best opportunities in the 2nd half, he is playing well but still has a lot to learn about scoring goals.

Levein is moaning about inconsistancy, well how about a comment from Levein on Wilkie? The donkey's cheating behaviour throughout the game was disgraceful.

You are full of it.Even when you beat us at the last game I stated that Hearts deserved to win as we were flat on that occasion.Honesty is what i'm about whats your excuse Jambo?AS for rare wins by the Well you can be excused for not looking at the league table for a wee while but you really must stop those stupid little porky pies to yourself.Trust me,were doing OK.

#21 We have some real knuckle draggers following us sadly. Thankfully we are hearing less and less of them, but they are still to be heard.
Motherwell fans, decent Motherwell fans, should accept that Kingston was abused and take it on the chin.
#17 Good morning Victorian, I see the bile brigade are out of the Wards and accessing the internet already.
Once upon a time these threads were visited by genuine football fans, and the contributions were made up of acceptable banter between us.
Now, a demented element have stained them with some of the most reprehensible comments.
The Scotsman needs to start weeding out the worst offenders. Otherwise, it will just degenerate even further, and could actually plummet to such a depth, that only Hibbies will be posting.
24

Graham Purdie,

Motherwell 30/03/2008 11:20:23
#21 shamefully that did happen but thankfully it is very rare.Only you however are stupid enough to think that racism is only about the difference of colour. If you "engage your brain" you will see that the racism\sectarianism in Scotland is a far cry worse at certain other stadiums in the SPL.Anyway don't be so rude as to tar me with the same brush as this kind of scum.
25

Cramondo,

What "kick in the teeth"?

Football reporters should surely be able to look at a league table, even one as mad as the SPL, and figure out how it works.

Aberdeen winning yesterday gives them a motive to beat Falkirk, which is what Hearts would want (along with a win at Rugby Park, by no means easy).

The real "kick in the teeth" is that all the top-six-deciders are not being played at the same time, yet another example of the crazy SPLit.

Well done to Tarts with Jam. There is still much to play for with top 3 finish that makes good a season. You can still play in UEFAs Cup next season with proper coach.

You will be happy with me because Kauno have 3-0 victory yesterday. Good punt from goalkeeper to Ledesma for first goal. We think goalkeeper may be next player for Tynecastle. Two goals at end of match from Grigalevicius and Jovanovic make to flatter, but we win so who does it matter!

You must ignore bad people who only post to make fun. It is bad timekeeping to write of such bad posters.

With football, did you enjoy game versus Dundee Uniteds? Is it the truth that coach Frail can only make team have two shots towards goal? Maybe if he can get proper coach certificates then Hearts can have many more shots towards goal. This is important step towards defeating evil hobos!

There is much money you have in SPL league. £80.000 can pay many bills to office supply company for much fax paper. But maybe if Vladimir himself is in Scotland there is no need for him to fax team selection. This is good to save money and money can now pay back interest payment on big debt.

His posts seem to be increasingly getting reported as unsuitable these days.

What I think is remarkable however, is the fact that Biley obviously ignored what you said in your earlier post!

Still, at least he's consistent. Consistently unable to read what people are saying (and consequently unable to address the issues) because he's falling over himself to post some vitriolic personal abuse.

It's common knowledge that Jim Jeffries, Craig Levein and McGhee have all been talked about within Tynecastle about the manager job. I think the latter two would be risky as both are ambitious and would like to manage in the EPL and, in McGhee's case, maybe Celtic, although I could see Mowbray going there.

So my preference is JJ. We need a consolidation phase and he's the man to bring some young players through. He's at the end of his career so one last hurrah could be attractive and if it goes well with him, we are more likely to attract another younger manager later on.
