Historic Environment Scotland (HES), which is responsible for more than 300 heritage sites, has announced plans for a phased reopening of its attractions, with 70 per cent to be open again by mid-September. The sites include both free to access and ticketed properties, with the reopening to start from 1 August. Here are 23 of the Scottish sites that are due to open in August and September.
1. Aberdour Castle
Dating back to 1200, this is possibly Scotland’s oldest standing castle. It will open to customers again from late August. Photo: Shutterstock
2. Arbroath Abbey & Abbott’s House
Located in Arbroath, this abbey was founded in 1778 by King William the Lion. It will reopen from late August. Photo: Shutterstock
3. Blackness Castle
This 15th century fortress stands on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, near the village of Blackness. It will reopen from late August. Photo: Shutterstock
4. Caerlaverock Castle
The grounds and green spaces surrounding the castle are now free to visit from 15 July. The castle will be open to visitors from late August. Photo: Shutterstock
