Obama chooses veteran Biden as running mate

Published Date: 24 August 2008
US DEMOCRATIC presidential candidate Barack Obama has chosen veteran Delaware Senator Joseph Biden, a leading voice on international affairs, as his vice presidential running mate.
Biden, 65, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is one of the most knowledgeable Democrats on foreign policy – an area where Obama, a first-term senator from Illinois, has been criticised as inexperienced.

Ending days of specula
tion, Obama announced the decision on his website, while his campaign office sent a text message and e-mail to supporters.

"Barack has chosen Joe Biden to be his running mate," the announcement said. "Joe Biden brings extensive foreign policy experience, an impressive record of collaborating across party lines, and a direct approach to getting the job done."

Biden, a Roman Catholic originally from the battleground state of Pennsylvania, will bring not only foreign policy expertise to the ticket but strong working-class roots.

That could help Obama connect with the blue-collar voters he has failed to attract in the run-up to the November 4 election against Republican John McCain. Obama and McCain are neck and neck in opinion polls.

Biden's 2008 presidential bid fell flat but he proved a forceful and aggressive debater, fending off some of the toughest criticisms of Republican President George Bush.

The choice of Biden, who was first elected to the Senate in 1972, indicates Obama was more interested in filling gaps in his foreign policy experience than in finding someone who could reinforce his message of bringing change to Washington.

Hillary Clinton, narrowly beaten by Obama in a bitter struggle for the Democratic nomination, welcomed the selection of Biden, who she described as "an exceptionally strong, experienced leader and devoted public servant".

"Senator Biden will be a purposeful and dynamic vice president who will help Senator Obama both win the presidency and govern this great country," she said.

Before he named his No 2, Obama said last week he had chosen someone who would be able to help him govern and who would offer him independent advice. The choice of a running mate can reflect on a candidate's judgment and offer hints of the qualities valued in a crucial adviser, although history has shown it is unlikely to have a major impact on the election between Obama and McCain.

McCain, 71, a Vietnam veteran and long-time senator from Arizona, has yet to name a running mate. The McCain campaign quickly launched an a television ad using a clip from a Democratic presidential candidates' debate earlier this year in which Biden said he did not believe Obama was ready to be president and praised McCain.

Stretching out the suspense for maximum political impact, Obama and a very small circle of advisers kept the decision under wraps all week.

On Thursday, Obama will formally accept the nomination as presidential candidate at the Democratic Party convention that opens tomorrow in Denver, making history as the first black American to do so.

I don't know about your part of the world but in Canada Obama is favoured by a margin of 75% to 25%. Seems Mr Bush's policies have not resonated well outside the Republican Party and even there McCain is trying hard to distance himself from past decisions. Mind you the Republican Party will try its damnest to discredit anyone that they disagree with. They have a history of name calling, mud slinging and dirty tricks.
Actually I quite like McCain as a person but his 'team' is the pits.
Obama in 08!

Team Obama/Biden have already started trying to discredit McCain. Democrats are known for dirty tricks and class warfare. Obama lives in a 1.65 million dollar house in Chicago that he paid way under it’s value with help of a very shady deal thru his buddy Rezko who is now in prison.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/watchdogs/757340,CST-NWS-watchdog24.article

Obama had the nerve to mention McCain had 8 houses like it was an awful thing. The fact of the matter is it should matter. McCain’s wife actually owns most of those properties with her children and what does it have to do with being President? It’s just typical Democrat dirty politics to disract from the real issues.

It’s funny you mention “swift boating” that is code speak for liberals diminishing the service our veterans have put in. Unlike George Soros and moveon.org the men of the Swift Boat deal were veterans of Vietnam. Some of them knew Kerry and how much of coward he was back then and it was a large group of men who wanted their voice heard.

Liberals only like to hear one sided views, that is why they chastise the new media outlets that show both sides.

Remember Hillary claiming Bill never had anything to do with Monica and the Monica Lewinsky affair was “A vast right wing conspiracy?” Hillary was lying for Bill back then. I guess Bill & Hillary were Swift Boated.

Get ready to hear Swift Boated a lot, it's a liberals way of saying I can't compete but I'll have a billionaire like George Soros keep playing dirty tricks.

#10. Kerry serves in combat, may or may not have been gloriously wounded, get called a coward. Bush's air guard barely has him leaving the ground, let alone leaving for Vietnam, and Cheney defers to raise a family while other leave widows behind, leave 4000+ dead for a pit of a country that doesn't deserve the sacrifice, and are heroes.

Eventually Cancer will be cured by a Democrat, and the Republicans will come out and accuse him of making doctors homeless.

My wife works in politics and sometimes the stuff she tells me makes me want to slap people for being really godd*mn stupid.

Republicans used to be about flag waving and low taxes, but now they're just about not being democrats and giving evangelicals reacharounds. It's sad. Ron Paul was a breath of fresh air.

Obviously you have never served or not long enough to understand enough about the various branches and componets of the service. Just earning your wings on the era fighter aircraft that Bush did was not only dangerous but you needed to be very sharp. That aircraft was being deployed Vietnam but once Bush got his wings they stoped sending that type of aircraft to Vietnam.

Bud Day, was shot down over Vietnam in an Air National Guard Jet. Bud Day is the most decorated person the USA has a live today.

Your comment about cancer is disgusting.

Obamas stripes are begining to show. His mantra has been all about "change", and "Washington is broken", then he picks a life long Washington politician as his running mate. So much for "change".

Biden will make a good attak dog.

I bet they won't have Barack Hussein Obama and Joseph Robinette Biden appear that much together after today. Obama looked so inexperienced next to Biden today when they were talking. Clearly Obama does not have a clue and the liberal media should have asked him tough questions like they did with Hillary early on.

I still think it matters little as to which candidate is voted in,as the special interest groups have such a stranglehold on the politicans of both parties. But that obama guy and some of his too left of liberal supporters really have me concerned.Lately he's been trying to come off as a moderate to win votes, but he is still leaning toward marxism in my eyes.

75% of Canadians want Obama for President? Let's see that poll, or is that just your wishfull communist thinking? You guys can have him! Oh, I forgot, Canada, China, the UK, and several other countries are much to racist to get a black man this far along the election process.

Obama was never scrutinized by the liberal press in the US. Now the democrats have a guy similar to Bill Clinton, a guy who can deliver a good speech but is an an emty suit, except this guy Obama can't give a speech without a tele prompter.

Hillary and all the other candidates were scrutinized by the press and asked tough questions, but not Obama, they were feared to be labeled a racist. The only network that was asking tough questions was Fox but democrats hate fox because it's fair and balanced and Obama refused to go on that network even though Hillary and other democrats went on for interviews and were treated very well.

Nice to see how our brain-washed Republi-bots are busy polluting the rest of the world's bandwidth with their reliably "innacurate" talking points and juvenile name-calling. As Obama said, "Is that all you got?"
As far as Obama's house, it was paid for through some of the $4 million he received in book royalties. They also paid fair market value, through months of back and forth with the previous owners, same as anybody else would. Rezko didn't buy the place for him or get them any better a price than anyone else would have gotten. Obama had a long sit down with the Chicago Tribune board to discuss anything about Rezko already, it's apparently the Republican's attempt for another "Whitewater" type waste of time, effort, and tax payer dollars for when Obama's elected.

The T.Boone Pickens and co. financed "Swift Boaters" and their ilk were one of the lower points in recent political history, but no one expect any less from a cretin like Karl Rove. I used to be a fan of Mc Cain, but he utterly sold out to the most reprehensible elements of the Grand Oil Party. The cast of characters lurking around his disorganized and dysfunctional campaign organization should have been shown the door long ago, but instead he embraces these discredited losers and their agendas designed to squeeze out that last dollar of the middle class and hand it over to his fellow members of the gilded class.

#18, D-945,

I certainly agree that Obama is an empty suit, but not Bill Clinton. Bill gave great speeches which actually had meaning. Also, he wrote a large part of them himself. If you ask him tough political questions, he'll be able to reply because he understands the issues.

Obama makes preacher-type speeches that he can read from a teleprompter and which tell you very little at all. Ask him a question and he'll uhhh and ummm his way through a semblance of a response, still without telling you anything of substance.

#2, Take him he's all yours.

RightOfCenter in #12:

let me clear up this nonsense about bush's military record. during later half of Vietnam war Bush was of age to go and serve. He joined the Texas Air National Guard along with other sons of wealthy/powerful people who were all kept out of the war. Some air guard people went to Vietnam. But the group Bush was with was kept out.

Bush had a legal obligation to complete certain training with the Air Guard over a period of years. He did not complete this legal obligation. First he quit the Texas Air Guard and demanded to get on with the Alabama Air Guard as a substitute. He had done OK in his early pilot training, but then suddenly just quit it and demanded a transfer. Then when he went to Alabama he never once even showed up to do any of the training at all. If he'd been a normal person he'd have been charged for this. It is believed that bush was on cocaine during this period. He wouldn't even show up for drug tests in the Albama Air guard which was required.

cheney of course avoided the war completely by repeatedly using legal loopholes to get out of it. Reverend Jim Wright (Obama's ex-pastor & the man anti-christians love to hate) did serve 6-8 years in US military prior to Vietnam war. Kerry, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, did serve and went to Vietnam. He was also in a very dangerous unit that patrolled the rivers of Vietnam.

McCain is seen as a traitor by many vietnam vets including by some who were in the Hanoi prison camps with him. There is much evidence for these vets to think this way as well. and I've already put up links to document this.

Neither Obama nor McCain has any respect for the American people or the American military people at all. both of them likely agree with Kissinger who said that a military man is a dumb animal meant to be sacrificed for foreign policy goals.

Wally, both my father and both my brother are in the military. Are you in the military?

The only one that realy dodged thge draft was Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton when he recieved his notice wrote a letter saying he feared for his life and loathed the military. Bush served, Cheney never received a draft notification because he was either in college or married with a pregnant wife at the time. Not volunteering is not being a draft dodger. Why do you liberals keep trying to re-write history?

Left wing hate web sites try to diminish Bush and Cheney because they are ashamed of their poor performance.

Lying and putting cigars in unlikely places or, maybe about sexual deviants which he is an expert on!
Nothing about the bombing and killing of innocent men, women and children he ordered in Yugoslavia and Iraq?
No comment about these infamous events; I am certain!

Biden's stance as a Catholic should be interesting if Obama pursues his pro-abortion position. Or will this be another sad case of calling himself something, but in reality he ain't.
