I want as many people as possible to know about Haining
THE forgotten story of the only Scot to have died in Auschwitz is to be revived by Gordon Brown in a new book being written by the Prime Minister on wartime courage.

Jane Haining, who perished in Auschwitz in July 1944 alongside an estimated two m
illion Jews, will be one of several subjects Brown is to highlight in the book, to be published later this year.

Born in Dumfriesshire in 1897, Haining was murdered by the Nazis after she admitted to having wept when seeing Jewish girls being forced to wear the yellow star of David.

Filmmakers and historians who are trying to honour Haining's forgotten bravery now hope that the book will inspire a fresh focus on someone they say deserves to be recognised as one of the greatest heroines to have emerged from the country.

A Church of Scotland missionary, she worked in a Kirk girls' home in Budapest during the war, having turned down numerous requests from the Church to return to the relative safety of Scotland. Of her insistence to stay, she declared: "If these children need me in days of sunshine, how much more do they need me in days of darkness."

Only two memorials to her exist: a pair of stained glass windows at the Queen's Park church in Glasgow where she worshipped, and a plaque in the Kirk of Dunscore, near where she was born.

Brown's book follows his similar volume on courage last year, which highlighted figures such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.

A plan to make a film about Haining, with Emma Thompson in the starring role, is still in the development stage three years after first being granted funding, but filmmakers hope that Brown's book will stimulate fresh interest in a woman who paid with her life for the compassion she showed to Germany's persecuted Jews and who has been dubbed "Scotland's Schindler".

Admirers of Haining say that it is about time Scotland gave her due recognition. She is commemorated on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem, named on the Avenue of Righteous Gentiles – those honoured by Israel for having aided Jews during the Holocaust.

Morag Reid, an expert on Haining's life, said: "I have come to admire her so much that I want as many people as possible to know about her. I am aghast that more people don't know her story."

Haining arrived in Budapest in 1932 to start work as the matron of the Church of Scotland-run girls' home in the Hungarian capital.

Around 400 girls studied at the mission, the vast majority being Jewish. On the eve of war, after Hungary had joined the Axis powers, the Church in Scotland ordered Haining to return home, fearing for her safety.

She refused. Indeed, it was reported that she cut up her leather luggage to make soles for the girls' shoes.

In April 1944, Haining accused a cook in the mission of eating the sparse rations of food meant for the girls. The cook, a member of the Hungarian Nazi party, denounced her to the Gestapo. Two officers arrested her and she was taken to the so-called "Gestapo villas" in the hills outside the city.

Church leaders begged for her release but she was charged, primarily, with having worked among the Jews and for having wept when seeing the girls attend class wearing yellow stars.

A few weeks later Haining arrived at Auschwitz, classified as prisoner 79467. Two months later she was dead. Officially, the cause of death was cachexia, a general collapse of the system. However, it is thought by many within the Kirk that she died, alongside millions of Jews, in the gas chambers.

She managed to send letters from Auschwitz. The last, dated July 15, 1944 – three days before her recorded death – was to the headteacher in Budapest, Margit Prem. She concluded: "There is not much to report here. Even here on the way to Heaven there are mountains, but further away than ours."

Filmmakers were given money in 2005 to make a movie about Haining's life, but the project is still in the development stage as producers seek more funding.

Brown raised Haining's story during his historic lecture to Israel's Knesset in July. The Prime Minister has also given lectures on the missionary.

Haining's example is also heralded as being responsible for furthering the cause of human rights in the United States.

One of her former pupils, Annette Lantos, the wife of US Senator Tom Lantos, formed the US Congressional Human Rights Caucus in memory of the Scottish teacher.

I was pleased to discover Jane Haining. I'm Jewish, was born and raised in Glasgow during the war and did not live far from Queen's Park. I'm surprised at myself not knowing about this fine woman. I have visited Budapest a number of times and don't recall any "mention" of her. I certainly hope the film about her gets made.

This was a very brave lady.

Brown on the other hand, is merely abusing this to further his own career. He should remember he is the Prime minister and not an author. He has a job we pay him to do, and it is most definitely NOT writing.

In my opinion, bearing in mind his kirk upbringing, Brown is way too close to religious nutters than is healthy in a democracy. He and others are free to believe what they want, but religion has NO place in a 21st century democracy. If religious people wish to influence policy, they should stand for election.

What we ned is a secular law, just like Turkey, which helps to keep the religious nutters in check.

I assume this article has just been 'lifted' from a London Labour PR piece about Gordon Brown. The shame of the man.

Being sensitive to the plight of the jews is an old political ploy. He could have found many Scots who were just as brave and forgotten, but this lady will win him more plaudits.

I have always wondered why it is that the jewish history obtains more sensitivity than all the others. It does seem contrived and politically driven, which leads me to ask, why?

perhaps, no5, it is the majority religion (ie white, christian) that tends to wipe out perceived enemies in their millions

Extraordinary - a noted historian writes about an unknown Scottish wartime hero and campaigner against racism, who made the ultimate sacrifice for human rights, and the comments move from admiration of the central figure in the story to politically motivated abuse of the author and his family upbringing, down to outright anti-semitism, in five easy moves.

I first heard of this brave lady from a beautiful song about her by Karine Polwart called Baleerie Baloo on the album Scribbled in Chalk.
If the publicity from this,or any other book, helps get a film made about Jane Haining then so much the better. I couldn't care less who writes the book or why. As for Jane Hainings motives I'm sure she was concerned for the needs of the children in her care irrespective of their religion.

The sooner ALL Religion is completely removed from education and politics (government); the sooner people residing on planet earth will MAYBE; begin to enjoy their short stay in tranquility and peaceful harmony with each other, devoid of the senseless slaughter of millions of innocent victims that has now become an every day event.

You are 100% correct. Religion, which was originally invented by the jews for the jews saw the introduction of a beastly god who was bloodthirsty and barbaric beyond all belief. He was a protector of the jews and would murder Egyptians at will to protect them. Sometime later a christian version was brought to the world for people who were more prone to worship a more sensitive god. Then came the Islamic version, a bastardisation of the previous two.

I agree, once we rid our world of all religion we will be on the road to recovery, but the chances of that are slim.

Humans will be living in space in the next 200 years and even then there will still be the residue of religious doctrine.

Nothing pre dates Jewish/Christian/Islamic history parallel for four thousand years.

In the beginning : God crated etc etc...everything else is bunk...Isn't it?

Cavemen, Dinosaurs, Evolution and so on are the creation of warped ungodly possibly even Satanic scientist heretics...or so we are led to believe.

All religions have their roots in superstition and mythology...created by mankind...look at the similarities between the egyptian goddess Isis with Mary...Horus and Jesus...it is obvious that the story was filtched form other belief systems and cobbled together to suit a different culture...

Buddhism...African religions...Hindu..all pre date Judaism....humans are story tellers and they like a good yarn...end of.

Interesting, on no evidence whatsoever it is uneqivocally stated that she was murdered!

People die in and out of custody!

During the Boer war which ended circa 1901 some 29,000 Afrikaaner women and children died in British concentration camps. The "murderer" in the British concentration camps was an organism called Salmonella Typhi, the causative agent of Typhoid fever. The British medical thinking at the time was to "purge" the system of disease and the inmates were regularly administerd a substance commonly called Epsom Salts.

In later life the inmates who were children at the time of internment swore blind that the Britsh had forced their parents to drink ground glass. This was being circulated up to at least circa 1950. The Epsom Salts produced at the time looked pretty similar to glass that had been ground.

Internees are unlikely to be considered "neutral" witnesses to what they claim to have experienced during their internment

I've got a bit of a soft spot for the gods of Olympus myself. Mind you they were a very violent and bloodthirsty but they did seem to have more fun than the God of Abraham. And before anyone accuses me of being anti Semitic the God of Abraham is the God of the Christians and the Muslims as well as of the Jews.
It is all basically the same religion.

It's amazing how the TRUE NUTCASE FRINGE (i.e. lunatic secularists who cannae mind their own aboot other people's beliefs) use any mention of religion as an excuse to launch into a rant.

Boys and girls, you have been warned. The lunatics have taken over the asylum. The thought police are in training.

Strange how nobody was inspired by their atheism to help, eh? (ooh, now this'll be a red rag..).

Mr Pict 21# Could you tell me please why it is that when a son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister etc. dies. The vast and I mean vast majority of people who claim to be non religious go looking for a vicar or priest to conduct the service. Could it be hypocrisy? or are they just edging their bets?

I know it must be difficult for some numpties to believe that Jane Haining wasn't on holiday at Auschwitz, that her last letter to her friend and colleague wasn't a holiday postcard or that her tattoo, 79467, wasn't her room number.
I also know that that some of them will always ask "why?". Its not their fault, bless 'em (well, not the ones that don't 'believe' obviously) but here is a link which might help others:

People still (just about) retain the right to express an opinion, and pass comment whether you like it or not.

The fact that you would seek to "insult them into silence" says much more about you, than it does about them.

Hard left at the next junction, is it?

The Military Tribunal at Nuremberg were acting in accordance with Charter having a set of 28 Articles.

Article 19: The IMT will not be bound by the normal technical rules of evidence.

Article 21: The IMT does not require proof of "facts" presented.

Consult with a lawyer to grasp the significance of this!

No wonder it was found that the murder of some 40,000 Polish Officers and intellectuals was carried out by the Nazis in the Katyn forrest.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union the KGB files were released and it was then made known that the MUrder of the Poles in the Katyn Forrest was the work of thr KGB alone, the Nazis had nothing to do with it! History entails the detailed analysis of what is claimed to have taken place in the past. I stopped believing in the theology of the holocaust when the first person was imprisoned for demanding the intellectual freedom to critically analyse the evidence. No examination allowed, no belief!!!!!

Firstly, it is not necessary for me to deny anybody's theological beliefs or theologica dogma! This includes belief in the theology of the holocaust!

It is up to the prosyltisers of any particular theological persuation, in this case the holocaust to convince me of its credibility!

You seem to have a problem with english comprehension!

Are your parents, warders, pscychiatrists, mental health workers etc. aware that you have unsupervised access to the internet???

I have not read a single post from you that has contributed anything of substance to any ongoing debate in this vehicle of discussion and exchange of ideas.

All you have contributed are your attempts at offering people that contribute to these postings personal insults! Those have in fact proved to be of a comedic nature rather than offering offence!

You seem to harbour a vast pool of anti-white race hate, choosing to espouse the Asian theologies of the Jews.

Jews have an Asian origin as they are the descendents the Bedouin tribesman Abraham who came from Ur in Asia! Ancient Ur was not located in Europe!!!!

No doubt, you are also gullible enough to worship the intolerant Asian God on the cross! From the name I use to make my postings you can readily see I do not worship the intolerant Asian gods namely, Jehova, the Jewish Rabi Jesus or the even less tolerant Allah along with his paedophile prophet, Mohamed.

Incidently, all three of these Asian Gods are the same, just different names for the same deity!
