A 73-YEAR-OLD man is in critical condition after he was beaten unconscious near a city take-away, police have said.

The elderly man had just left the shop in Glasgow’s Milton area when he was attacked by a man who had got out of a small, black hatchback car.

A few words were apparently exchanged, then the attacker punched the man to the ground.

The victim was in Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital last night where hospital staff said his condition is critical.

Strathclyde Police appealed for information about the assault which happened at around 9:50pm on Saturday in Ashfield Street.

Detective Constable Neil Cattigan said: “From witnesses, the man had managed to evade some of the punches thrown by his attacker but he was eventually knocked unconscious to the ground. He is still in hospital and so far, because of his injuries, we have not been able to speak to him.”

After punching the elderly man, the attacker got back into the passenger side of the car which made off south towards Possilpark.
