Community News: Donate old toys to help children out

A CHARITY appeal for vulnerable children in Edinburgh is appealing for unwanted toys.

The Radio Forth Cash for Kids campaign needs items for its Christmas Toy Appeal.

Last year the event was able to provide toys for more than 2400 local youngsters.

Organisers said donations could be dropped at the station's offices on Forth Street or by visiting www.forthone.com/cashfor kids.

Release of film hopes to help prevent abuse

A FILM has been launched to persuade Lothians health workers to intervene if they think a patient is being abused.

The resource, titled Safeguarding adults: If you don't do something, who will?, is aimed at helping nurses spot early signs of abuse and stopping it before it escalates.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council's chief executive Prof Dickon Weir-Hughes, said: "This new resource will help nurses and midwives recognise a range of situations in which abuse occurs."

Walking group stages outing

A LEITH-based walking group will have its monthly outing on Sunday. The Leith Walk begins at 11am at the Foot of Leith Walk and will go via the Water of Leith and Victoria Park towards Granton and Inverleith Park. The return will be via the Water of Leith, or bus if preferred.

Library hosts creepy event

THERE will be some spooky goings-on at Oxgangs Library this Sunday.

The family-friendly event will teach children how to make spooky paper lanterns in time for Hallowe'en.

On the same day, older children and teenagers will also be able to take part in a "spooky nails art" lesson.

The William Street store offers a fitting service and collections from around the world.

It also provides an in-house beauty room offering waxing, tanning, manicures and pedicures.

New spirit promotion is a rum do

Caribbean street art is to hit the city tomorrow as a brand of rum from the Dominican Republic is launched in the Capital.

As part of the promotion, street artists will daub urban slogans and insignias on a large wooden box on Castle Street, representing a fusion of Scottish and Caribbean influences.

The promotion, which will last for two days, will also include 'pimp your T-shirt' workshops, taking place in a number of bars across the city.
