Diver airlifted to bends unit

A DIVER has been airlifted to hospital with a suspected case of the bends after surfacing too quickly at St Abbs harbour in the Borders.

Forth Coastguard were called by a diving group around 1.10pm yesterday and an RAF helicopter was sent to the scene, along with the coastguard from Eyemouth.

The man, who is understood to be in his early 20s and from the Nottingham area, was winched to the helicopter and flown to the hyperbaric chamber at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

The facility is the only one of its kind in Scotland and also treats carbon monoxide poisoning and other complaints.
