FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a fire this afternoon only to discover the culprit was a steam train passing through Waverley Station.

The service received two calls from concerned passers-by shortly after 3pm today who mistook the rising steam for smoke and believed that a building was alight on Waverley Bridge.

Three fire engines were scrambled to the false alarm at 3.15pm today.

The Tornado steam locomotive was used by ScotRail last month for train trips around Scotland.
