Glasgow Caledonian staff fury at university 'hypocrisy'

LECTURERS at Glasgow Caledonian University have hit out at high salaries for management while they face job cuts.

They claimed nine senior staff at Glasgow Caledonian University, including principal Pamela Gillies, now earned more than 100,000 a year.

Four deans earned more than Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, and three took home more than Prime Minister David Cameron, they said.

Over the same period, 373 teaching and support jobs had been cut, mainly through an extended voluntary redundancy scheme, union leaders said.

Glasgow MSP Bill Kidd last night condemned the salaries as "disgraceful" and said he would be demanding an explanation.

He said: "The numbers now at executive level and the levels of salaries being paid to them at GCU are nothing short of disgraceful, and need to be highlighted and explained.

"I would want the principal and the board of Glasgow Caledonian University to explain their direction of travel, where the number of executive staff has trebled and their own salaries doubled, while the number of teaching staff has been cut by 100 in the past four years."

Glasgow Caledonian Combined Union Committee (CUC) has called a rally for tomorrow to expose what it called "hypocrisy" and to campaign against more cuts on campus.

CUC convener Dr Nick Mc-Kerrell said: "Staff have witnessed a steady cutting of staff numbers in the past five years. More than 300 colleagues have gone."
