Heat from recycling plan under scrutiny

THE VIABILITY of creating a recycling plant which would provide heat for local homes and businesses in Midlothian is to be examined.

Edinburgh and Midlothian councils propose to create a new recycling plant at Millerhill, Midlothian, which would deal with household waste from both areas.

A recent survey showed there was great public support for the idea, particularly if it could be used to heat local homes.

Now the body Zero Waste: Edinburgh and Midlothian is undertaking a study into the viability of setting up a heat network near Millerhill.

If progressed, it could mean cheaper heat and electricity for those living there or businesses operating in the area.

Midlothian councillor Russell Imrie said: "If we have a facility on this site with the ability to produce energy then it makes perfect sense to look at whether we will be able to use it in the local vicinity.

"I'm sure residents and businesses in the area would welcome lower utility charges."

The study is likely to take about a month, although it will not be known whether heat and electricity will be produced on the site until a contractor is appointed to build and operate the facility.
