McDonald’s to create 190 jobs in Scotland

FAST food giant McDonald’s is set to create more than 190 jobs across Scotland this year.

The burger chain expects more than a half of the new posts to go to young people and around 30 per cent to first-time workers.

The jobs at existing restaurants in Scotland are among 2,500 being created across the UK this year.

Jack Gordon, 17, began his career at McDonald’s and is now a crew trainer at the Robroyston restaurant in Glasgow, a position he reached after taking part in the company’s apprenticeship programme.

He said: “I applied for a job at McDonald’s because I wanted a new challenge. I was attracted to the prospects of being employed by a large company and working my way up the career ladder.

“I had spent over a year looking for a job and I was struggling given the tough jobs market.”

The new jobs build on the 13,500 posts McDonald’s has created over the last three years and take the UK staff count to 90,000.

Thomas Kelly, vice-president of franchising at McDonald’s, said: “The job market for people like Jack who are just starting out in their careers is particularly tough, so it’s important for us to be able to offer him and other young people across Scotland the chance of a job.”

Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg welcomed the announcement and praised the company for its record on staff training.
