MHAIRI Black, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, has been a welcome addition to Scotland’s political sphere since comprehensively defeating Douglas Alexander in the general election.

Eating chips for lunch at the House of Commons, staying on to finish her university exams and becoming the youngest MP in hundreds of years have been just a few of her notable moments so far.

So it came as something of a shock when Ms Black was reportedly spotted quaffing champagne with fellow Glasgow MP Natalie McGarry in the British Airways lounge at Glasgow Airport on Monday.

The @eyespymp Twitter account, which describes itself as providing ‘crowd sourced gossip’ tweeted at 7.49pm on Monday: “SNP’s @nataliemcgarry and @mhairi1921 opting for champagne in the invite only BA Glasgow Airport lounge.”

There was a sharp intake of breath from the UK electorate.

People waited for a response from McGarry and Black.

Silence.

Until 10.18am on Tuesday morning, when Black set the record straight, tweeting: “I think you need to check your sources - it was highland spring and a bowl of soup for me. Sorry to disappoint!”

McGarry added: “I can confirm [Mhairi’s water] was of the flat variety. Unlike my fizzy soft drink.”

So, scandal over as the two politicians are revealed to be soft drink socialists.
