His mother, Isabella Buchanan, 69, said she had not seen Mr Cochrane since the death of her younger son, John Cochrane, from liver failure on November 20, 2009, aged just 31.

The pensioner spent the weeks visiting Mark in the intensive care unit. She said: "He couldn't speak but was eventually able to signal to us."

A 29-year-old man has been charged in connection with an assault on Mr Cochrane.
