The official opening this morning was due to be compered by Sheila Henderson, of the Musselburgh Museum and Heritage Group, the voluntary organisation which will be running the museum in partnership with East Lothian Council.

Pupils from Musselburgh Grammar School were expected to read poetry at the event, with guests being welcomed by the sound of bagpipes.

The museum is being opened after campaigners fought for around 20 years to have the facility in the town.

The Honest Toun's Association, the Musselburgh Conservation Society, the Old Musselburgh Club and the Musselburgh Twinning Association all played key roles in securing the museum.
