SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE: First Minister and leader of the SNP Alex Salmond decided to announce his retirement from frontline politics the day after the Scottish independence referendum.

Salmond took the SNP from a minority movement into the governing party of Scotland. He also came close to realising the dream of independence, but saw the Yes campaign fall short at the final hurdle.
