First Minister Alex Salmond told MSPs at Holyrood that Sir Ian Wood was “an authority on North Sea oil and gas” but “not the only authority”.

He said: “The figure I have often quoted of up to 24 billion barrels is not a Scottish Government figure at source, it is a figure that the industry ­produced, and I think it is a ­robust figure.”

Perhaps the First Minister would be better calling on the services of Doctor Who, who returns to TV tonight with Scottish star Peter Capaldi making his debut.
