Cycle path
THAT was an excellent letter from Magnus Moodie (14 March) who wants compulsory cyclist insurance and stiffer penalties for those cyclists who break the law. There is only one pertinent point I wish to raise and that is the question of identification of the guilty cyclist, since they can break the law with impunity and simply cycle off into the distance.
As the government urges more people to take up cycling, there will be more accidents involving pedestrians, either on the pavement or on shared paths. Taxation/council tax is being used to build yet more cycle paths so there must be a quid pro quo. What is needed is a cyclist’s identification number so that the offender can be traced.
Another suggestion that has merit is that cyclists who break the law should have penalty points put on their driving licence.
