Family values

The research findings that couples from broken homes still believe in marriage (your report, 13 April) doesn't surprise me.

It would, however, be surprising if the same could be said of the children of unhappy couples who stay together in the belief that they're doing it "for the children".

I find it depressing that so many couples are happy to give their offspring a poisonous idea of what family life should be. It's far better to live apart and be happy than together in a horrible atmosphere.

By the way, I can't be alone in being pleased that the chief executive of Relationships Scotland is called Stuart Valentine.
