The Diamond Jubilee has given us a terrific reminder of something iconic and apolitical.

Since the SNP has made the Saltire a political symbol of nationalism, patriotic Scots who do not subscribe to a division of our little island nation can now bring out their Union Flags.

I am sure most Scots will have been as delighted as the enormous, Union Flag-waving crowds in London were at the celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They should remember that the SNP’s policy is to have a referendum on the monarchy, not to retain it, as Mr Salmond would have it.

The Union Flag is an expression of togetherness which, of course, includes the Scots, English and Irish flags. What better way of letting the minority who are separatists recognise that that is what they constitute, much as The Scotsman’s hilarious cartoon (4 June) illustrated?
