Good sport?

In reply to Thomas Inglis (Letters, 2 March), I did not claim to have been "insulted" by Scots wishing defeat on my national team, I was just saddened. It is all very well declaring that Scottish nationalism is not necessarily anti-English, but the fact remains that sour anti-English sentiment is a key ingredient in the attitude of many nationalists.

David Sole's sensible letter (Letters, 1 March) affirming that he bore no anti-English grudge as has been suggested, drew from Bill McLean a hysterical response citing English thuggery at Italia 90.

What has that got to do with anything? All right-thinking Britons condemn hooliganism, and, hopefully, view sporting events as both fiercely competitive and fostering of international harmony and goodwill.
