Letter: Airport future

The chief executive of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, claims that Ryanair will only start operating from Glasgow Airport after it is sold as "BAA… management did not want Ryanair to operate on the same routes as other airlines" (your report, 13 July).

If this claim can be substantiated it is a serious distortion of the marketplace by BAA as it is acting against customer interest. BAA is soon due to sell either Edinburgh and Glasgow Airport but it is incredible that the Office of Fair Trading has left the decision on which airport to sell to BAA itself.

BAA should be forced to sell Edinburgh so that its Glasgow Airport then has to compete against Prestwick and Edinburgh - then we may get an airport marketplace that will act in the customers' best interests rather than the "natural segmentation" that BAA claims exists.
