Letter: Face of Wallace

Like 72 per cent of Scottish schoolchildren, I find it easier to recognise Cheryl Cole than William Wallace (your report, 12 August). The fact is that Wallace never sat for his portrait, nor did he appear on reality TV, neither option being open to him in his day.

All we have is highly imaginative "portraits" by later artists showing a bewhiskered and helmeted warrior who could be anybody under the sun.

Ms Cole, by contrast, is omnipresent on TV and in every kind of newspaper and magazine and must possess one of the best-known faces of modern times.
