Your report, "Scots families are becoming happier and more content" (18 August), made for interesting reading, particularly in the context of the depressing news that the number of jobless Scots is up by 5,000.

One might be forgiven for suspecting that we are not so much happier and more content as resigned to expecting the worse. We have revised our expectations.
