Simple task

It is disappointing to see the negative reaction in your editorial (10 June) to Holyrood's proposal that households should separate food waste in addition to the current sorting requirements.

It states that it's difficult enough for people as it is, separating their waste into separate boxes. Difficult? It takes a few minutes at most each day.

We create our own waste. Therefore we're surely responsible for dealing sensibly with it. Aren't we required by the European Union to be reducing waste and landfill? We must think about what we consume and how we dispose of it.

You ought, at the very least, to be inspiring readers of The Scotsman to be less messy and wasteful (reduce, reuse and recycle) and not suggesting, absurdly, rebates on council tax "for all the work the binmen are no longer doing".
