Rugby star Evans charged with glassing man in club

SCOTTISH rugby international Max Evans has appeared in court accused of glassing a man in the face.

Evans, 26, who appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, was said to have assaulted Alisdair McCaig by striking him in the face with a glass to his injury.

The incident was said to have happened at Edinburgh's upmarket nightspot Lulu on George Street on Sunday, August 1.

Evans faced a second charge under the Criminal Law Consolidation Act, which alleged he had a glass in a public place.

His lawyer James Kelly said Evans, who earned his first cap for Scotland against Canada in 2008 and also plays for Glasgow Warriors, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Sheriff Celia Sanderson granted Evans, of Clairmont Gardens, Glasgow, bail following the brief appearance on the conditions he does not go to Lulu Nightclub or approach or attempt to contact Mr McCaig.

Evans will have to return to court in January. He left court without comment.
