Scapa Flow diver dies after suffering the bends

A DIVER has died after suffering from the bends while exploring the wreck of a First World War battleship in Orkney.

The man was diving by the cruiser Dresden, one of the ships of the German fleet that had been scuttled in Scapa Flow, when he got into difficulties yesterday morning. .

The alarm was raised just before midday after the diver received medial treatment on the dive support vessel.

Shetland Coastguard search and rescue helicopter then transferred him to the Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall, which is equipped with a specialist chamber, but Northern Constabulary confirmed that he died later.
