Trophy awarded in memory of drowned army cadet

THE parents of a teenage army cadet who drowned in a boating accident have awarded a trophy in her memory.

Kaylee McIntosh, 14, from Fyvie in Aberdeenshire, died when a boat overturned on Loch Carnan on South Uist in August 2007.

Fellow cadets raised funds for the trophy in memory of the teenager carrying the inscription "Presented to the Army Cadet Force by her friends and family – The Fairest Flower o' Fyvie".

It is now awarded to the best two-star cadet in the 2nd Battalion The Highlanders, Army Cadet Force, the battalion of which Turriff Academy pupil Kaylee was a member.

The trophy was awarded to Lance Corporal Samantha Strowger , a 17-year-old member of the ACF's Banff detachment.

Following a ten-day fatal accident inquiry, a sheriff ruled a catalogue of systemic and individual failures had contributed to the cadet's death.

The schoolgirl's parents have made repeated calls for those involved in organising the training exercise to face criminal charges.

Mr and Mrs McIntosh, of Camaloun Road, Fyvie, are seeking 525,000 damages from the Ministry of Defence.

Their daughter was under the boat for 90 minutes before it was noticed she was missing.

Kaylee had been wearing the wrong type of life jacket, which resulted in her being pinned beneath the boat.
