UK news: Brain scans help predict schizophrenia

BRAIN scans could help predict the future onset of a mental illness in young people whose family has a history of the disease.

A study at Edinburgh University has found that it may be possible to forecast schizophrenia.

The research reveals that the brains of people destined to be affected by the illness - around one per cent of the population - suffer from an "accelerated shrinking".

It means doctors may be able to diagnose early.

MOBILE speed cameras will be in operation from next Monday at A90 Cramond, Muirhouse Parkway, West Granton Road, A899 Lizzie Bryce, A705 East Whitburn, A71 Polbeth, A198 DirletonToll, B1345 Drem, B1377 Drem to Ballencrief.

However, some of the cameras may not be put out if the weather conditions continue to be poor, the safety partnership which runs the technology said.

McKee demands truth over winter fuel claims

LOTHIANS SNP MSP Ian McKee has called for the UK coalition government to "come clean" on the future of winter fuel allowances after Liberal Democrat Vince Cable said he believed Prime Minister David Cameron wanted to reduce or scrap them.

Dr McKee said: "Vince Cable's comments have left many pensioners anxious about paying for their energy bills.

"The Chancellor should clarify the matter and reassure people that their winter allowance is not under threat."

Passport on to Concorde

The 35th anniversary of the first commercial flight by Concorde will be marked at the National Museum of Flight on January 22 and 23.

The museum, at East Fortune, East Lothian, will have music from the era, displays about the flight, a Concorde quiz, and a raffle to win entry to the Concorde cockpit.

Later trains for Christmas

RAIL bosses are to run extra services between Edinburgh and Glasgow tomorrow.

ScotRail said later services were being introduced as a result of possible reductions or delays to flights.

The last Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow Queen Street service will now be at 10.30pm.

Pick up something for the kids

There will be children's markets in Stockbridge and Portobello in February.
