UK news: Cameron presses on despite NHS 'danger'

David Cameron today signalled his determination to press ahead with "deep change" in the NHS as a survey found 94 per cent of NHS managers believe the government's controversial shake-up is "irrelevant" and "dangerous". He said the NHS faced a fundamental crisis if the reforms were blocked.

Trident bill 'to hit 26bn'

The cost of replacing the UK's nuclear deterrent has risen dramatically to around 26 billion, according to government figures published by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. CND general secretary Kate Hudson said: "Trident is a ruinously expensive white elephant the country can ill afford."

Bosses to take home 145 times the average wage

The pay of the country's top earners is set to "spiral" to levels not seen for decades, a report said today.

The High Pay Commission found average wages for most people were "stagnating", but chief executives were now paid up to 145 times the average wage. It said high earners would see their pay rise from five per cent of national income to 14 per cent by 2030.

A survey of 2000 adults found 70 per cent believed high pay made Britain "grossly unequal".

Delays on London lines

Train punctuality dipped last month, with the operators of the two main London to Scotland lines being the poorest performers. West Coast operator Virgin Trains had the poorest punctuality last month at 85.8 per cent while the other London-Scotland East Coast's figure was 86.5 per cent, although the company said its services were affected by fatalities and cable theft.

Dannii exits TV talent show

X FACTOR judge Dannii Minogue has left the show, she confirmed.

The 39-year-old singer has quit popular ITV talent contest days before the new series was due to launch. She issued a message to fans saying work commitments had led to her departure.

Dorset: A pilot and a passenger were pulled alive from the wreckage of a Tiger Moth biplane after it crashed in a field near Wimborne. The seriously injured men were airlifted to hospital The aircraft had reportedly been performing aerobatics shortly before it plunged to the ground.

London: Three teenagers, including a 17-year-old girl, will appear in court today charged with the murder of a 15-year-old boy who was stabbed to death in a street.

Temidayo Ogunneye, who lived in Peckham, was the fifth teenager to be stabbed to death in the city this year.
