Waverley police patrols stepped up

WAVERLEY station is set to see more high visibility police patrols despite a drop in recorded crime on Scotland's railways in the last year.

The station has been identified as a "hot spot" following a review of crime on the network, which sought to identify specific times and days of the week when incidents are likely to occur.

British Transport Police Chief Superintendent Ellie Bird announced there were 1,423 fewer crimes and offences on Scotland's railways last year – the sixth consecutive year that the figure has fallen.

Between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010, the area recorded 125 or 5.4 per cent fewer crimes, down from 2,328 to 2,203, and 1,298 or 30.6 per cent fewer other offences, down from 4,237 to 2,939.

Six stations – Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street, Stirling, Aberdeen and Paisley Gilmour Street have been identified to maintain or increase passenger safety and additional surveys will be undertaken to identify what is required to address any perception of crime.

A further six will be identified as the year progresses.
