Badminton: Cruise for Capital youngster as Lily claims national badminton title

Edinburgh's Lily Farnood claimed the singles title at the Bank of Scotland Under-11 Championships at the National Badminton Centre in Scotstoun in Glagsow.

Seeded No.1, the Capital girl waltzed through to the final, where she defeated the second seed, Rothesay's Sarah Sidebottom, by 21-15 in the final.

Sarah gained revenge in the doubles when she joined forces with Dundee's Lauren Middleton and beat Farnood and Jennifer Lafferty 21-10.

In the boys' events, Glasgow twins Christopher and Matthew Grimley showed great promise by claiming a clean sweep of the titles. The pair had already won the boys' doubles at Under-13 level at the Bank of Scotland Championships at Meadowbank last month and they added the Under-11 crown with a convincing 21-9 victory over Lloyd Holland and Jack Riddell.

The only slight shock came in the singles when Christopher, the No. 2 seed, beat his top-ranked brother, but it was as tight a match as the 21-18 scoreline suggested.

Boys' singles: Christopher Grimley (Cardonald) bt Matthew Grimley (Cardonald) 21-18.

Girls' singles: Lily Farnood (Edinburgh) beat Sarah Sidebottom (Rothesay) 21-15

Boys' doubles: Grimley and Grimley bt Lloyd Holland (Dumbarton) and Jack Riddell (Irvine) .

Girls' doubles: Sidebottom and Lauren Middleton (Dundee) bt Farnood and Jennifer Lafferty (Lanark) 21-10.
