Capital entertainment as Currie edge it

Boroughmuir 15,

Currie 18

CURRIE claimed the west Edinburgh bragging rights with a two-tries-to-nil win in an entertaining game despite the difficult conditions at Meggatland, writes Matt Vallance.

And, by scoring the only two touchdowns in the game (referee Andrew McMenemy disallowed another three – all of which seemed to be valid), Currie may be seen as having deserved their triumph. But such a simplistic assessment would be harsh on the young Boroughmuir forward eight, who produced a terrific pack performance, which deserved better than a losing bonus point.

However, the Currie backs were the sharper, as they showed with their two touchdowns.

The first, in six minutes, was scored, then converted by full back Jamie Forbes. But the catalyst was a storming run down the left by Alan Whittingham, advancing Dougie Fife’s original half-break 60-plus metres to the home line. Four forward drives came to naught, before Forbes ran a great line in support of Andrew Binikos to go over.

Currie’s second try came in 19 minutes, four minutes after Ally Warnock had cut the deficit with the first of his five penalty goals.

Currie won a turnover on half-way, Fife carried the ball into the home 22, where Warnock’s desperate effort to knock the ball dead only stunned it enough for Barry Mansfield to touch down.

Two Warnock penalties took the half-time score to 9-12, with the home stand-off levelling matters after 47 minutes.

Forbes and he then exchanged penalties before, ten minutes from time, the Currie full-back, twice wide from long range, goaled the clinching penalty.
