Expect jeers, not cheers, says Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard has warned his England team-mates to expect plenty more stick when they return to Barclays Premier League action.

The Liverpool skipper had been largely spared the boos from the Wembley crowd on Wednesday night as England fans vented their frustrations to those who under-performed so badly at the World Cup.

Gerrard scored twice to secure a much-needed victory on a night dominated by the news of David Beckham's enforced international retirement.

Of the World Cup seven who started against Hungary, the loudest jeers were reserved for John Terry, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney. Gerrard expects more of the same when the players head off around the country, but backed his international team-mates to eventually win over the boo-boys.

"It will be tough for all England players in the next couple of weeks with rival fans, I am sure we will get a bit of stick - but we deserve that and need to take it on the chin," he said.

"I have said that it would take quite a while to turn everything around, we are on the back of a disappointing World Cup and one win is not going to turn everyone on our side.

"But with hard work and performances like against Hungary, if we can build on it then hopefully the nation will get back behind us."
