James Forrest is convinced he can force his way into the Scotland squad for the Euros - after helping Celtic into the Scottish Cup last 16 with a scoring contribution in his first senior start since late September.

The winger betrayed few signs of his lay-off with an effervescent display in the 3-0 win over Falkirk that he set in motion by fashioning a 56th minute breaktthough. And, with his growing fitness levels following two substitute appearances, he believes making Steve Clarke’s squad for the country’s first major tournament in 23 years is an achieve target. And it is an ambition that Celtic interim manager John Kennedy appears convinced will be realised.

“it feels great to start and to top it off with a goal was great,” said Forrest, who has been capped 35 times by his country. “Since the turn of the year I’ve been training hard and I’ve felt my fitness levels get back up. That’s definitely helped me. Ask any player and they will tell you they want to be involved this summer. Everyone’s buzzing that we have qualified and I definitely want to go. There’s hiding that. I just want to play as many games as I can between now and hope that helps.’ The manager [Clarke] has been great. Right from the start he has made me feel part of it. I hope I have a chance.”

Kennedy, who may have taken charge for the final time with Celtic appearing to be closing in on the appointment of Eddie Howe, is in no doubt that Forrest is on course for the Euros. “He is the ultimate professional. He does everything he can to maximise what he has and it’s good to have him back.,” he said. “He showed that threat that allowed him to get the goal. We’re delighted to see him on the scoresheet and also to get those minutes in his legs. Steve knows that he is a good player. He ieliminates opponents with that attacking threat. It’s important to have that in the squad and it would be a surprise if he is not in the squad.’
