Fraser on Fishing: Leadburn provides good sport after frustrating start

Our club outing took us to Leadburn Manor fishery on the outskirts of Penicuik.

When we arrived early the water was bubbling with fish and everyone was keen to get out and get started.

Floating lines went on and drf flies and buzzers were the order of the day.

Despite fish coming and splashing at the flies, only one trout was caught early on. It was quite infuriating to see so many fish, yet have so little interest from them.

Changing to a mini Yellow Dancer brought about my first fish and it weighed in at more than 3lb.

I played it right out for fear of dropping it and not getting another offer and, once it was safely in the net, I settled down for what was to turn out to be a good day.

It always pays to keep on the move and my efforts were soon rewarded with another good fish.

The Leadburn trout are powerful fish and don't give in easily and I dropped it right at the net.

Still, the interest from the fish was there and I was getting plenty of offers.

Despite having landed only one, I felt it was only a question of time as other anglers round about me were starting to see some action.

Some big fish were starting to be caught and, with only an hour of the session remaining, I got my own biggie.

It all went to show that perseverance does pay off, even when you think there are no fish.
