Golf: Caldwell and Reilly square up

A FEW weeks after joining forces to retain the Dispatch Trophy for Silverknowes, Tam Caldwell and Keith Reilly will lock horns tonight in the semi-finals of the Turnhouse Open.

Caldwell progressed to the last four with a 2 and 1 success over Alan Hogg of Dundas Park and was joined by Reilly after he beat Borderer Glen Oxton by the same margin.

A 3-4-3 run from the 15th earned Caldwell his success, while Reilly recovered from losing the first two holes to birdies to overcome his Minto opponent.

Graham Robertson, another member of the successful Silverknowes side at the Braids for the last two years, is also through to the semi-finals.

Also a member of the host club, he beat Scott Young 2 and 1 in an all-Turnhouse affair, taking revenge for a defeat at the hands of the same opponent in the club championship.

Robertson's reward is a last-four clash with rising Turnhouse star Lewis Bain, who won a ding-dong affair against Varun Varadharajan of Royal Burgess.

That also produced a 2 and 1 outcome as Bain, the Lothians Boys' champion, recovered from going behind early on.

• CRAIGIELAW'S Shaun McAllister made a flying start in the Audi Cork Irish Masters, the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event at Fota Island.

The former Scottish Boys' Stroke-play champion shot a four-under-par 68 to figure in a five-way share of the lead in the 10,000 event. Archerfield's Lee Harper and Zack Saltman both shot 73s.
