Hawick 33 - 35 Dundee HSFP: Dundee grab first points of season with last-gasp kick

You could almost detect the words "at last" being mouthed by Dundee's coach, Ian Rankin, after his side finally secured their first result of the season with a last-gasp win over Hawick at Mansfield Park in a dramatic and entertaining match that went to the wire.

In all, the game generated ten tries in an even split between two sides committed to attacking rugby and which was decided in the 80th minute of play with a converted try from Dundee's massive tighthead prop Alan Brown.

Referee David Changleng, who gave an exemplary display of how to control a match under the revised law interpretations, had played a long advantage to Dundee, but finally called play back to the original penalty spot from where Brown took a quick tap and barged over, leaving Peter Horne to kick the winning conversion goal.

It was a cruel outcome for Hawick, who had staged a second-half comeback inspired by the brilliance of teenage midfielder Stuart Hogg. Up until then it looked a hopeless cause for the Greens who were not able to live with Dundee's huge advantage in the scrum, ultimately the deciding difference between the teams.

No.8 Danny Levison helped Dundee into a 21-7 lead at half time with two tries, their third effort in the first period coming from Horne, who had the power to shrug off the Hawick defence close to the line, his conversions of all three tries underlining his goal kicking skills.

Hawick's only first-half score came from a half break by Rory Hutton, clever hands by Keith Davies and good finishing from skipper Bruce McNeill, Neil Renwick adding the conversion.

A converted try by Graham Hogg answered by a solo effort from James Fleming, maintained the 14-points gap before younger brother Stuart Hogg took over engineering tries for Davies and Steve Anderson before scoring a brilliant try himself for a 33-28 Hawick lead, only for Brown to wreck Green hopes of victory .

Scorers: Hawick: Tries: McNeill, G Hogg, Davies, Anderson, S Hogg. Cons: Renwick 4. Pens: Name 2. Dundee HSFP: Tries: Levison 2, Horne, Fleming, Brown. Cons: Horne 5.
