Hockey: Kelburne on song to end unbeaten run by Grange

Grange's unbeaten record fell when they lost 2-1 to Glynhill Kelburne in their catch-up Subway national league match at Peffermill.

Kelburne took the initiative in 11 minutes when Gareth Hall swept the ball home after good build-up work from teenager Lee Morton. Seven minutes later the Paisley side went two up. Hall and Ross McIntyre did the spade work and Michael Christie finished the move. Grange had their chances before the interval, Rob Barr's penalty effort being saved by Mark Fulton before the Kelburne keeper denied Craig Harper from a penalty corner.

Grange controlled most of the play after the interval but created few clear-cut chances until eight minutes from time when Duncan Batchelor pulled one back. However, Kelburne held out.

Elsewhere, the fairytale season for high-flying CALA Edinburgh carries on relentlessly. Like Grange before them, VWS Dundee Wanderers were dumped out of the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup by the second division giant-killers on a penalty shoot-out after the sides drew 1-1 in normal time.

CALA got off to a flying start in the opening minute. A move up the right involving Philip Rae eventually found Steven Glass in the circle and the former Wanderers stalwart slammed a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. The action was end to end before Wanderers equalised with a penalty corner strike by Allan Law.

After a second-half stalemate, Ramsay Bell opened the penalty shoot-out for CALA, but the outcome hung in the balance when Spaniard Carlos Linero missed his spot effort to tie the scores at 1-1. However, Scott Sutherland, Steven Glass and David Guy held their nerve while Colin Johnstone made a couple of crucial saves, and CALA emerged 4-2 winners.

In the other ties, holders Glynhill Kelburne scored ten against Aberdeen Asset Management with doubles from Jonny Christie, Mark Ralph, Gareth Hall, Willie Marshall and Gordon McIntyre.

Western Wildcats handed second division Watsonians a 14-goal mauling, with Scott McCartney's five goals and Joe Simpson's hat-trick the highlights.

In the women's cup, Milne Craig Western's plans to snuff out the threat presented by Giffnock playmaker Rhona Simpson succeeded as they secured a single-goal victory. Anna-May Morton broke the deadlock.

Dundee Wanderers hammered third division Glasgow Accies 17-0, while first-half strikes by Louise Baxter and Louise Carroll gave Grove Menzieshill the nod over CALA Edinburgh.

Second division leaders GHK beat Inverleith from the third flight 4-2.
