Mixed fortunes for Midlothian fighters in the Capital and Fife

FIGHTERS from Midlothian Amateur Boxing Club had mixed fortunes at the two shows in Edinburgh and Fife.

At the club's own dinner show at the Grosvenor Hotel in Haymarket, home heavyweight Colin Bradley forced his Capital rival Kevin Vincent to retire in the first round with a heavily bleeding nose, courtesy of some stiff and accurate left jabbing.

And Midlothian welterweight Jamie Smith outscored Leith Victoria's Neil Kennedy.

However, Fauldhouse coach Pat Toner was incensed when the judges decided by a majority that Lochend welterweight Tommy Philbin had been a points winner over his own Robbie McKee.

After the fight Toner vowed to send in an official complaint about the controversial scoring.

There was also a points decision in favour of Leith Victoria lightweight Sean White against Jordan Pollok of Whitehaven in Cumbria.

At another show in Kirkcaldy, Midlothian southpaw light-flyweight Barry Hogg appeared to be extremely unlucky to lose his British Youth championship semi-final to Londoner Jimmy Smith of the Repton club. Hogg lost out by a disputed and narrow 6-4 verdict.

However, Hogg's Midlothian flyweight club-mate Scott Brown failed to impress against Welshman Jarod Jones, who won 6-4.

Lochend light-flyweight Liam Tervit had no complaints after being consistently outpunched by Northampton and England's Chanze Nolan, who looked to have won by a considerably wider margin than the 4-2 verdict handed down by the ringside judges.

• LOCHEND lightweight boxer Josh Taylor has claimed a spot in the Scottish team at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

He had been due to box off against Renfrewshire's Ryan Smith in Kirkcaldy today but his opponent has been forced to withdraw through injury after cutting his hand at work.
