Rangers v PSV: PSV coach doesn't have problem with Rangers' tactics

PSV Eindhoven manager Fred Rutten has dismissed criticism of Rangers' European approach ahead of the second leg of their Europa League clash.

Rangers frustrated PSV in Holland last week to secure a goalless draw in the last-16 encounter.

Rangers manager Walter Smith is likely to adopt the same 5-4-1 formation at Ibrox, although he has more attacking players available after Steven Naismith and Kyle Lafferty rediscovered their fitness in recent days.

Rangers' defensive approach was once described as "anti-football" by Lionel Messi after a goalless draw against Barcelona, but Rutten believes that every approach should be respected. And the PSV manager empathised with Smith over the criticism of his tactics as he reflected on working as a coach in a country that demands attractive football.

The Dutchman said: "I will never decide whether something is good or bad if a team gets results.

"In Holland we always think we have to get results and play beautiful football like Barcelona.

"There is only one club in the world that can do that. That's why I always have respect for my opponent."

PSV defender Wilfred Bouma also felt criticism of Rangers' approach was harsh.

The former Aston Villa player said: "If you play for the title in Scotland and you are still in Europe, this is the way they get their results.

"As long as they get results, it's hard for me to say anything about that.

Bouma said he expected Rangers to be just as tough a nut to crack at Ibrox. He added: "They got a result last week and they will try to finish the job."

The 31-year-old added: "In the first game they played really organised and it was hard for us to break them down so I expect something similar. It's up to us to try to break them down and get an away goal.

"It's up to them how they play. In the last couple of European games they played something similar but now they are playing at home, they will get good support and I think they will attack a little bit more. We have got to be prepared for everything."

Rutten signalled he would also adopt a pragmatic approach to the contest.

He said: "The approach and attitude shouldn't be about the beauty of the match but trying to win the match."

But he added: "The way we are playing I am confident we will create lots of chances. I don't think it's easy to change the way we are playing."
