Wasps 36 - 17 Glasgow: Young Warriors show up well but are outgunned by star-studded Wasps

Sean Lineen knows he still has a lot of work to do before his injury-ravaged Warriors open their Magners League season against Leinster at Firhill on Friday.

Lineen's youngsters, attempting to plug the gaps left by their pre-season injury crisis, learned there is no substitute for experience.

The Warriors, with 19-year-old fly-half Duncan Weir making a promising debut, 21-year-old scrum-half Henry Pyrgos starting his second match and lock Tom Ryder drafted in 48 hours after arriving on loan from Saracens, lacked nothing when it came to honest endeavour. But that was never enough to match international-studded Wasps whose forward supremacy provided the foundation for a six-try performance.

After seeing his young Warriors start promisingly and show their character by digging in at the end to prevent defeat becoming a rout, Lineen insisted: "We got a really good run-out and it will hold us in good stead against Leinster."

He will have to stick with the kids with skipper Al Kellock, Dougie Hall, John Beattie, Johnny Barclay, Argentine wing Federico Aramburu and the scrum-half pair of Chris Cusiter and Colin Gregor all still absent.

"We've had a pretty horrendous injury toll from Scotland's Argentinian tour and Beattie, Barclay, Cusiter and Kellock - four key guys - are out for a long time That tests our strength and depth but that's where we are. Blood the youngsters," said the Warriors chief.

"The young lads that came in did a really good job. I was really impressed with Alex Dunbar when he came on, Ryan Wilson took his try well. These lads are 21 years old.

"Henry Pyrgos too - it's Henry's first year as a pro so we're expecting an awful lot of him. Then there were two young tens outside - Weir and Ryan Grant."

Pluses for Lineen included the solid return of Scotland centre Graeme Morrison and a quality solo try from DTH Van Der Merwe to bring the scores level at 10-10 after 29 minutes, with Wilson scoring the second five minutes from time.

A big downside was seeing props Jon Welsh and Moray Low dominated by Wasps' England duo Phil Vickery and Tim Payne. "Big things are expected of those two boys. Moray Low is the current Scottish tighthead so he's got a bit of work to do there. He's disappointed," said Lineen.

"We couldn't get any momentum there. The first 20 minutes, we attacked well. It was frustrating we didn't have more than a penalty to show for it but they're a young bunch of lads. It was a game we needed but we have work to do."
